WASHINGTON – A $15 million construction project will soon create delays and closures on 16th Street in Northwest D.C., a popular route for commuters during the morning and afternoon rush hours.

The city is replacing the 16th Street Bridge over Military Road.

“The bridge has served the District well, but it needs to be replaced,” said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser Monday.

The bridge is 57-years old.

“This project is aimed at ensuring that our transportation infrastructure remains safe and reliable,” she added.

Lane closures and other restrictions will begin on Friday, March 27. They are expected to be in place for four months.

“Travelers can expect to see lanes reduced to one lane in each direction,” said Paul Hoffman, a civil engineer with the D.C. Department of Transportation.

“We estimate that there will be delays for the folks that do stay on 16th Street,” Hoffman added.

Commuters will be encouraged to use Georgia Avenue to bypass construction.
