Lamar overwhelms Houston Baptist 72-14

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) — Caleb Berry threw for 391 yards and seven touchdowns in the first half as Lamar overwhelmed Houston Baptist 72-14 on Saturday night.

Berry, already Lamar’s all-time leader in touchdown passes, had long-range scoring strikes of 31, 61, 57 and 81 yards in the first quarter. His 26-yard score to Mark Roberts late in the second gave the Cardinals a 62-7 halftime advantage.

Roberts, who caught 5 for 205 yards and four touchdowns, became the school leader for career touchdowns with 19.

Lamar (6-3, 3-2 Southland Conference) has now equaled the most wins since the 1979 team was 6-3-2. The Cardinals racked up 609 total yards while limiting HBU to 250 total yards.

Lamar’s defense thwarted the Huskies (2-7, 1-5) as DaQuan Stewart intercepted two passes, returning one 56 yards for a score. The Huskies were intercepted three times and lost two fumbles.
