Whitecaps beat Rapids 1-0 to earn playoff spot

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Kendall Waston scored in the 70th minute and the Vancouver Whitecaps took the final Western Conference playoff spot with a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night.

The defender flung himself at Pedro Morales’ corner kick for a header.

The Whitecaps (12-8-14) entered the weekend a point ahead of Portland for the fifth and final playoff spot and had to win in order to advance after the Timbers beat FC Dallas 2-0 in Texas earlier Saturday.

Vancouver will visit Dallas in the Western Conference’s No. 4 vs. No. 5 one-game playoff Wednesday night

The Rapids finished the season 8-18-8.
