Indian Wells tourney generates higher econ impact

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — The BNP Paribas Open that combines the ATP and WTA tennis tours in a two-week tournament had an estimated gross economic impact on the Coachella Valley of nearly $374 million.

Tournament director Steve Simon said Wednesday that the economic impact of $373,898,629 is more than a 29 percent increase since 2011, when the last economic impact study was done. Three years ago, the economic impact was $289,287,532.

The studies are done by George Washington University.

A total of 431,527 people attended the tournament in Indian Wells this year.
