MIAMI (AP) — A tropical depression is headed toward the Mexican state of Campeche and is likely to strengthen to a tropical storm.

The depression’s maximum sustained winds early Wednesday are near 35 mph (55 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center says strengthening is forecast and the depression is expected to become a tropical storm before moving inland.

A tropical storm warning is in effect in Mexico from Celestun to Frontera.

The depression is centered about 120 miles (195 kilometers) west-southwest of Campeche and has been nearly stationary over the last few hours but should begin moving east again later in the morning.
