Woman hit by California train was Chinese scholar

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — A woman killed by a train in Central California last week was a visiting scholar at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office identified her Wednesday as 26-year-old Mingyue Yuan of China.

The school says Mingyue worked in a lab in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology.

She was killed and two other people were injured Saturday near Vista Point when they were caught by an Amtrak train as they took sunset photos on a bridge overlooking the ocean.

Mingyue was struck and thrown from the bridge.

One man was able to make it to safety.
