Airstrikes in and around Syrian town of Kobani

In northern Syria, Kurdish militiamen are making advances in the border town of Kobani as the U.S.-led coalition intensifies its air campaign to halt the advance of militants from the Islamic State group. The Kurds fought pitched street battles Wednesday, according to activists and officials, taking advantage of air raids in and around Kobani that have slowed the push of the militants.
