Police said the incident started outside the Gum Springs Community Center in Alexandria, Virginia on Sept. 14 when a security guard spoke to 37-year-old Jamon Downing about his unsecured dogs.

Downing placed his dogs in his car before turning and walking towards the security guard with a knife, police said. The security guard shot Downing once, but Downing survived.
