Town residents: Call it Christmas vacation

MARSHFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Residents in one Massachusetts town are fighting to bring back Christmas vacation.

Marshfield’s school committee last month voted 3-2 to change the name of what has been traditionally called Christmas vacation to “holiday break.”

Supporters of the change say the old name represented only one tradition while the new name promotes inclusion, diversity and tolerance.

The Patriot Ledger (http://bit.ly/1w8pKuv ) reports that resident Elaine Taylor presented the committee on Tuesday night with a petition signed by 443 people who want to see the vote reversed and the name Christmas vacation restored.

None of the committee members responded to the request, presented during the public comment period of the meeting. Chairwoman Marti Morrison said the committee would hear residents’ concerns but would not engage in dialogue on the matter.
