Fired former colleague is held in shooting of two Americans in Riyadh

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Officials in Saudi Arabia say today’s shooting of two Americans in the Saudi capital of Riyadh was carried out by a former colleague who had recently been fired from the U.S. defense contractor where they worked.

One of the Americans was killed and the other was wounded. Police then arrested the suspect — who is a Saudi-American dual national — after wounding him in a shootout.

According to a statement, the suspect had recently been dismissed from his job for drug-related issues.

A person with knowledge of the shooting says the suspect believed that the man he shot and killed had turned him in for the alleged drug use.

The State Department says the victims were employees of Vinnell Arabia, a U.S. defense contractor supporting Saudi National Guard military programs in the Saudi capital.
