2012 winner Atsede Baysa out of Chicago Marathon

CHICAGO (AP) — Former Chicago Marathon women’s champion Atsede Baysa of Ethiopia was scratched from Sunday’s event after officials realized she was not coming.

Organizers were under the impression she would run but realized Friday that she was not in Chicago. They removed her from their website.

Even so, Baysa was announced as a late scratch right before the race.

It was not clear if she ever intended to compete. Organizers simply called it a misunderstanding.

Baysa won the 2012 Chicago Marathon, edging Kenya’s Rita Jeptoo down the stretch. She finished fifth in Chicago last year.

Jeptoo repeated as Chicago Marathon champion on Sunday.
