–Trevone Boykin, TCU, threw for 433 yards and a school-record seven TDs as the 10th-ranked Horned Frogs showcased a new fast-paced offense by scoring the most points in history in an 82-27 rout of Texas Tech.

–Ameer Abdullah, Nebraska, nudged his way back into the Heisman Trophy conversation by running for 225 yards and three TDs and setting a school record with 341 all-purpose yards in the No. 16 Cornhuskers’ 42-24 victory over Rutgers.

–Devon Johnson, Marshall, rushed for a school-record 272 yards and four TDs to lead the No. 23 Thundering Herd to a 35-16 win over Florida Atlantic.

–Jeremy Langford, Michigan State, ran for 177 yards and three TDs, and the No. 8 Spartans trounced rival Michigan again, 35-11.

–Vad Lee, James Madison, passed for four TDs and ran for two more in a 48-40 win over Charlotte.

–Keenan Reynolds, Navy, ran for a career-high 251 yards and three TDs in a 41-31 victory over San Jose State.

–Anu Solomon, Arizona, threw for 294 yards and five touchdowns in the No. 15 Wildcats’ 59-37 win at Washington State.

–Brandon Doughty, Western Kentucky, threw for 371 yards and five TDs in a 66-51 win over Old Dominion.

–Taylor Heinicke, Old Dominion threw for 471 yards and three TDs in a 66-51 loss to Western Kentucky.

–John Robertson, Villanova, threw three TD passes and ran for two more scores in a 48-28 win over Morgan State.

–Matt Breida, Georgia Southerm ran for 201 yards and four TDs in a 69-31 win over Georgia State.

–Ammon Olsen, Southern Utah, threw for four TDs and ran for another in a 25-17 win over North Dakota.

BULLISH BULLDOGS

Mississippi State’s recent slugfests with Kentucky have taught the Bulldogs that there’s no such thing as a safe lead against the Wildcats.

And thanks to timely touchdowns by Dak Prescott, Josh Robinson and Christian Holmes, the nation’s top-ranked team built a cushion culminating in another hard-earned victory over the Wildcats.

Prescott accounted for three touchdowns, Robinson rushed for two TDs and No. 1 Mississippi State held on to beat Kentucky 45-31.

Holmes’ score on the short kick was the exclamation point in a wild game that stubborn Kentucky tied early and got within a touchdown another four times — the last coming on Patrick Towles’ 4-yard TD run nine seconds earlier that made it 38-31.

Credit Heisman Trophy hopeful Prescott and Robinson, who answered with TDs on three occasions. Prescott ran for TDs of 2 and 11 yards and hit Brandon Hill for an 8-yard TD.

SPARTAN ROUT

With under a minute remaining in another comfortable win over his team’s biggest rival, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio had the Spartans keep right on running the ball.

No kneel-downs, no letting up. Eventually, Jeremy Langford scored a touchdown with 28 seconds left.

The eighth-ranked Spartans trounced Michigan 35-11 for their sixth victory in the past seven games against the Wolverines, but all that recent success hasn’t removed the chip from Michigan State’s shoulder.

Langford ran for 177 yards and three touchdowns for the Spartans, who outgained Michigan 446-186 and won their 14th straight game against a Big Ten opponent.

This one was extra special, of course. The only other time Michigan State has won six of seven over the Wolverines was between 1956-62.

PASSING THE BEAR

Carson-Newman coach Ken Sparks earned his 324th victory, passing Paul “Bear” Bryant and moving into sixth place on the NCAA’s career victories list as the Eagles rallied to a 35-34 win over North Greenville.

Sparks, in his 35th season at Carson-Newman, improved his career record to 324-87-2. Bryant went 323-85-17 for Maryland, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Alabama from 1945-82.

The top five coaches in career victories are John Gagliardi (489-138-11), Eddie Robinson (408-165-15), Bobby Bowden (377-129-4), Pop Warner (336-114-32) and Larry Kehres (332-24-3). The 70-year-old Sparks has the most wins of any active coach.
