Frederick panel to review plan for new Wal-Mart

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — Frederick’s city planning commission is set to review plans for the new Frederick Towne Center development that will include a new Wal-Mart store.

The Frederick News-Post (http://bit.ly/Zzm5t2 ) reports the commission will take up the commercial center Monday in the first of two public hearings on the site plan. It would be built in the place of Frederick Towne Mall.

The mayor and Board of Aldermen rezoned the land 15 months ago to make way for the 155,000-square-foot Wal-Mart store and three smaller buildings.

Some residents said the city doesn’t need another Wal-Marl because it has two already. Others say the plan doesn’t meet the long-term vision for the neighborhood.

In response, officials required certain design elements. The plan includes a wildflower garden, public art and an interpretive walking path.
