Suspended Texas player Walker leaves school

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas guard Martez Walker, who had been suspended while facing misdemeanor assault charges involving his girlfriend, has withdrawn from school, university officials said Thursday.

Walker had been suspended from all team activities in September after he was charged with beating his girlfriend in a campus dormitory. He faces a charge of injury/dating violence, which carries up to a year in jail and $4,000 in fines.

Walker, who is from Detroit, played in 33 games last season, averaging nearly 13 minutes and 4.7 points.

Texas opens the season Nov. 14 against North Dakota State.
