Va. officials eye cost of educating immigrant kids

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Officials in northern Virginia want to calculate the cost of educating nearly 2,000 unaccompanied children who crossed the border in recent months and are now enrolled in county schools.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1w4MhWL ) reports there are 1,131 such children living in Fairfax County, 417 in Prince William and 227 in Loudoun based on numbers from the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement.

Boards of supervisors in Fairfax and Loudoun have been studying the cost of educating the children. Prince William County Supervisor Peter Candland started a petition asking the federal government to pay.

Fairfax Supervisor Pat Herrity says Fairfax schools will spend more than $14 million educating refugees for a full year of per-student costs for English language learners.

Loudoun school officials say they have had no problems accommodating the children.
