Va. tax holiday for appliances begins Friday

WASHINGTON — If you are in the market for an energy- or water-efficient appliance, this weekend is a good time to make your purchase. Virginia’s October sales tax holiday begins Friday, Oct. 10, and runs through midnight on Monday, Oct. 13.

Over the four-day period, purchases of specified Energy Star and WaterSense products will be exempt from sales tax. The appliances must be for non-commercial use and cost less than $2,500, according to the Virginia Department of Taxation.

Qualified Energy Star appliances include certain dishwashers, laundry machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, compact fluorescent light bulbs and dehumidifiers.

WaterSense products include bathroom sink faucets, faucet accessories and toilets. The tax holiday also may apply to some used appliances.

Retailers can opt to offer other appliances tax-free, but would be responsible for paying the state the taxes.
