WOBURN, Mass. (AP) — A judge has denied bail for a nanny charged with murder in the death of a 1-year-old Massachusetts girl in her care, saying she would be detained by federal immigration officials if released and possibly deported to her native Ireland.

The Middlesex Superior Court judge on Wednesday also scheduled a Jan. 20 trial date for Aisling Brady McCarthy.

McCarthy is charged in the January 2013 death of Rehma Sabir. McCarthy was taking care of the baby in the family’s Cambridge home. She has pleaded not guilty.

The Boston Globe (http://bit.ly/1shb2kE ) reports that McCarthy’s lawyers say she has no desire to leave the U.S. and is willing to surrender her passport and be subject to GPS monitoring. McCarthy allegedly has overstayed her visa and is subject to deportation.
