DC public school enrollment continues to rise

WASHINGTON (AP) — Preliminary figures show enrollment is up in both District of Columbia charter schools and traditional public schools this year.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1vOZB1z ) reports the annual enrollment count conducted this week by the State Superintendent for Education shows there were 38,103 students in public charter schools and 47,651 students in D.C. public schools.

The numbers reflect a nearly 3 percent increase in enrollment for the public school system. For charter schools, the increase is slightly more than 3 percent.

About 44 percent of public school students in D.C. attend charter schools now. That number is unchanged from last year.

In recent years, both charter schools and traditional public schools have seen enrollments increase. The enrollment gains come after years of declining enrollment in D.C. public schools.
