D.C. cat cafe closer to reality

WASHINGTON — UPDATE, 3/10: Kanchan Singh, who is using Kickstarter to fund a new cat cafe, has exceeded her goal. As of today, a total of $19,746 has been raised.

D.C. is one step closer to getting its first cat cafe.

According to Kickstarter, Kanchan Singh, 24, is nearing her goal of $15,000 to open the cafe which, according to a WTOP.com profile in February, will be a veritable Shangri-La for cat lovers.  Kittens and cats will be roaming around while patrons grab a cup of joe and some munchies. A partner organization will make the cuddly pets available for adoption.

The crowdsourcing site says Crumbs & Whiskers’s — the future name of Singh’s cafe — has more than $12,000 pledged. That means she’s getting some of the things on her wish list, including two “awesome cat towers” and “super comfy floor cover seating.”

“Don’t envision something like Busboys and Poets, because that’s really not what it is,” says Singh, a University of Maryland alum and former management consultant, in February. “But it is somewhere where you can kind of hang out, get a cup of coffee and also be in the company of cats.”

Of course she still needs to find a storefront, and as last reported, the D.C. Department of Health has its own issues about co-mingling food and felines. But funding is critical to any venture, especially this furry one.
