Violent protests leave 14 dead as Kurds seek help to stop advance of Islamic State extremists

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish news agencies report at least 14 people have died and scores injured in clashes between Turkish police and Kurdish protesters.

The violence centered in predominantly Kurdish eastern Turkey, but there have been clashes across Turkey and Europe as demonstrators demand more action against the Islamic State group’s advance on a town on the Syrian-Turkish border. In Brussels, protesters smashed a door and pushed past police to enter the European Parliament.

The besieged Kurdish forces are struggling to hold onto the Syrian town of Kobani, which is on the border with Turkey. Some European countries are arming the Kurds, and the U.S.-led coalition is carrying out airstrikes against the Islamic State extremists. But protesters say it isn’t enough.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (REH’-jehp TY’-ihp UR’-doh-wahn) also warns that the aerial campaign alone won’t halt the militants’ advance. He’s calling for greater cooperation with the Syrian opposition.

However, Syrian Kurds say the Turks are actually hindering their defense of Kobani by preventing Kurdish militiamen in Turkey from crossing the border into the town to help in the fight.
