Police commissioner seeks US probe of department

BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore’s mayor and police commissioner have asked the U.S. Justice Department to review the department after use of force cases have resulted in millions of dollars in legal settlements over the past several years.

Commissioner Anthony W. Batts announced at a news conference Friday that he wanted a review of the department. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said in an emailed statement that she welcomed any partners willing to work in efforts against excessive force complaints.

Councilman Bernard Young sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday asking the Justice Department to take a look at the department.
