AC/DC’s Malcolm Young has dementia

WASHINGTON — AC/DC founding member and rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young has dementia, and that’s why he left the band in April.

“Malcolm is suffering from dementia and the family thanks you for respecting their privacy,” Young’s relatives said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Malcolm Young and his brother AC/DC lead guitarist Angus Young founded the band in 1973.

The rockers will release their 17th studio album, “Rock or Bust,” in December.

It will be the first album without Malcolm Young in 41 years.
