MSHA issues 131 citations during mine inspections

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Federal inspectors issued more than 100 citations during inspections at U.S. mine operations in August.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration said Wednesday that the inspections of a dozen coal mines also resulted in 131 citations and 11 orders.

MSHA began the monthly special impact inspections in April 2010 after the Upper Big Branch mine explosion killed 29 coal miners. Since then, 810 inspections have been conducted resulting in 12,948 citations, 1,189 orders and 54 safeguards.
