Suspect in fatal California gym attack charged

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors say the victim of a fatal beating at a San Francisco Bay Area gym had asked the suspect’s girlfriend whether she wanted a ride on his motorcycle days earlier.

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe says investigators are trying to determine whether that was the motive for the Sept. 17 attack at a Bally Total Fitness gym in South San Francisco.

The suspect, 46-year-old Kenneth Osako, appeared in court Monday on a murder charge. The San Mateo County Times reports (http://bit.ly/1Cb7d2l) that he declined a public defender and was then taken back into custody without bail.

His family declined comment.

Osaka is accused of repeatedly striking 43-year-old David Galindo on the head with a steel weightlifting bar. Galindo later died at San Francisco General Hospital.
