HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — Inmates and staff at a state prison near Hagerstown are celebrating the donation of five tons of inmate-grown produce to the Maryland Food Bank.

The event Tuesday caps a successful growing season for pre-release inmates at the Maryland Correctional Training Center.

The minimum-security inmates grew cantaloupes, watermelons, beans, zucchini and baby pumpkins in a one-acre garden across the road from the prison. They made food donations throughout the summer.

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services says those donations are a small fraction of the more than 700 tons of food harvested or grown by inmates statewide for the Maryland Food Bank this year.
