WASHINGTON — A crash at a gas station in Fairfax County, Virginia, sparked a fire Sunday night, and officials say the fire started after a driver knocked over a fuel pump.

Flames erupted just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the 8500 block of Richmond Highway in the Mount Vernon area, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said. Firefighters found a car and a fuel pump on fire; the driver had gotten out of the car before rescue crews arrived.

The driver had knocked the fuel pump over when she accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of stopping as she was pulling up to the pump to fuel up. The impact sparked the fire.

The driver, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to the county’s fire department.

No firefighters were injured. The fire caused around $50,000 worth of damages.
