Oilers hire Olympic figure skating champ Pelletier

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Edmonton Oilers have hired Olympic figure skating champion David Pelletier as a skating coach.

Pelletier won a gold medal in pairs with partner Jamie Sale at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. The Canadians were awarded gold along with a Russian pair after a judging scandal.

It was Canada’s first Olympic title in pairs in 42 years.

Since the 39-year-old Pelletier retired from professional figure skating, he has served as a power skating coach. He has worked with the Canadian women’s hockey team.

The Oilers announced the hire Wednesday.
