VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Nearly 100 ring-necked doves rescued from a shed in Virginia are ready for adoption.

Barbara Gipson of the Virginia Beach Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says the doves make good pets.

The group treated the animals after they were rescued by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in May.

PETA animal sheltering and care specialist Laura Brown says the birds were found in a small shed in Isle of Wight County after a neighbor had complained to the Norfolk-based group about cats on the property.

Brown tells The Virginian Pilot (http://bit.ly/1m6sQwO) that several inches of feces covered the ground of the shed and several birds had lost feathers from fighting for space.
