SEQUIM, Wash. (AP) — The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is equipping two 10-ton buoys at its Marine Science Lab in Sequim (skwihm) to help research offshore wind power.

The bright yellow buoys are each worth $1.3 million. After testing in Washington waters, the lab says they’ll be deployed in November for up to a year at offshore wind demonstration projects near Coos Bay, Oregon, and Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Scientists from the Energy Department lab hope to learn how much electricity could be generated by offshore wind turbines.
