CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) — A former Piedmont Regional Jail supervisor will spend more than four years in prison for his role in a tax return scheme.

William A. Coles Jr. also must make more than $1 million in restitution.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/YxlDvD ) reports that the 49-year-old Pamplin resident was sentenced Wednesday in federal court.

A federal jury convicted Coles in May of seven counts involving a conspiracy with his wife, Sybil Coles.

Prosecutors say William Coles told co-workers at the regional jail in Farmville that his wife knew of secret law enforcement loopholes to get larger tax refunds. The couple then collected fees for Sybil Coles to prepare false tax returns.

Sybil Coles was sentenced to five years in prison in May.
