Around 1:15 a.m., police responded to the 1000 block of Largo Center Drive in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, for a report of an armed carjacking and robbery. The victims said an armed man demanded their property and the car, and they turned over the keys, fearing for their life, police said.

A patrol officer about 10 miles away in Suitland spotted the carjacked vehicle and pursued it, police said.

The chase lasted only 30 seconds before the suspect crashed into two utility poles in the 4200 block of Silver Hill Road and the car caught fire.

Officers tried to extinguish the flames and pull the suspect from the burning car, but he died at the scene. The suspect was identified as 48-year-old Derrick Foster of Bowie.

Officers recovered a gun from Foster.
