Remains at Prince William Co. school site reburied

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) — Prince William County school officials and a family have laid to rest remains unearthed during a construction project.

Workers found the more than 100-year-old remains last November as they were preparing to build playing fields for a new high school near Manassas.

Local historians concluded they likely belonged to ancestors of the Lynn family, which has deep roots in the area.

The remains were a source of controversy after current members of the Lynn family became upset that school officials removed the remains to allow for a football field to be built.

A schools spokesman says the construction plans couldn’t be changed to avoid the gravesite.

The Washington Post reports (http://wapo.st/1wekZkp ) that the family and the district compromised, reburying the remains in a nearby plot during a solemn ceremony Saturday.
