McMurry knocks off Houston Baptist 26-17

HOUSTON (AP) — Matthew McHugh threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns, leading McMurry to a 26-17 victory over Houston Baptist on Saturday night.

McMurry (1-0), a Div. III school, took an early lead and held on as Houston Baptist (0-1) started its first official season with a loss.

Jonathan Fleming hit D’Angelo Wallace on a 14-yard scoring strike to put HBU ahead 14-13 with 9:29 remaining in the third. The War Hawks answered with a drive to retake the lead 20-14 after McHugh passed to Jeret Smith from 22 yards out for the score. Smith caught 6 passes for 123 yards.

Travis Shinn kicked a field goal to close to 20-17, but McHugh responded with a 55-yard TD pass to Smith to seal the win.

Fleming threw for 179 yards and 1 touchdown for the Huskies.
