LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. (AP) — Soi Phet won the $200,750 Los Alamitos Mile by 7 1/4 lengths in a track-record time at Los Alamitos on Saturday.
Ridden by Hall of Famer Kent Desormeaux, Soi Phet ran the distance on the main track in 1:33.95, bettering the old mark of 1:34.50 he set in winning the Bertrando Stakes on July 3.
Soi Phet paid $11.60, $4.20 and $3.60. Even-money favorite Masochistic returned $3.40 and $3, while Tonito M. was another 2 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $4.60 to show.
Desormeaux improved to 3 for 3 aboard the dark bay.
“The first thing I asked the outrider was if we broke the track record because it felt like it,” he said. “He was like a machine out there, begging me to let him go and he took off when I let him.”
Soi Phet has eight wins in 29 career starts and earnings of $472,686. Seven of those victories and over $400,000 in earnings have come in the 13 races since he was claimed for $16,000 by his current owners over 15 months ago at now-closed Betfair Hollywood Park.
“I was very confident,” trainer Leonard Powell said. “This horse was training very well.”
In the $75,500 Beverly J. Lewis Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, Uzziel led all the way to win by three-quarters of a length.
Ridden by Tyler Baze, Uzziel ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14.70 and paid $10.20, $5.20 and $3.40.
Ramona’s Wildcat returned $4.80 and $3, while Miss Super Quick was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third and paid $3.80 to show.
The victory, worth $45,000, increased Uzziel’s career earnings to $152,638, with four wins in eight starts.
Lewis and her late husband, Bob Lewis, owned Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners Silver Charm and Charismatic.
