Holy Cross nips Morgan State 29-26 with late TD

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — Shane Smith scored on a 1-yard run on the final play of the game to lift Holy Cross to a 29-26 win over Morgan State on Saturday, despite a school record 271 yards rushing by Bears’ backup running back Herb Walker.

Walker became the starter after it was discovered Lamont Brown III, who rushed for 124 yards in a season-opening 31-28 loss at Eastern Michigan, tore an ACL and is out for the season. Walker had touchdown runs of 46 and 2 yards in the fourth quarter, the last putting Morgan State (0-2) ahead 26-23 with 3:39 to play.

Holy Cross (1-1) responded with a 75-yard scoring drive to pull out the win.

Morgan State finished with 413 yards overall, 356 rushing. The Crusaders totaled 379 yards with Pete Pujalis completing 16 of 29 passes for 193 yards.

Jason Jackson ran for 251 yards for Morgan State against Savannah State in 2005.
