WASHINGTON — One of the eaglets in a tree at the Metropolitan Police Academy, in Southeast D.C., took a big leap Saturday.

Spirit, who hatched on March 15, fledged the nest — took flight — early Saturday morning, the Earth Conservation Corps said in a statement. One of their “citizen scientists” caught the whole thing on their cameras:

[related_gallery align=”right”]Spirit came back almost exactly 48 hours later, early Monday morning. The Earth Conservation Corps said in the statement that she’ll probably be back and forth for the next month or so, and will likely stay in the area.

Her parents, Liberty and Justice, have been nesting in D.C. since 2001, the conservation corps said.
