Honors await race caller Tom Durkin at Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Track announcer Tom Durkin will be honored at Saratoga Race Course on Sunday after calling his last race in a 43-year career.

The New York Racing Association says there will be ceremony in the winner’s circle after the Grade 1 Spinaway.

NYRA President Chris Kay says Durkin was “one of the greatest race callers in history” and New York racing was “fortunate to have had him … for so many years.”

Durkin describes himself as “one lucky announcer.” He thanked fans, grooms, jockeys trainers, owners and “these magnificent animals.”

On Monday, the closing day of the Saratoga meet, Durkin will greet fans and sign autographs.
