Coming to Tysons Galleria: a new font

The Tysons Galleria is home to some of the nation’s most upscale retailers — Hugo Boss, Cartier, Burberry, Chanel, Coach, Gucci, Saks Fifth Avenue. Its signs don’t match its ritz.

General Growth Properties, the Galleria’s owner, is proposing to replace the mall’s weathered and dated signs while replacing the font with a more modern, block style. The 12 new signs include four “monument” signs to be installed at the Galleria’s entrances on International and Galleria drives, two of which will be visible to user of Metro’s new Silver Line. The Tysons Corner station is located a block to the Galleria’s south.

“Each of these amendments represents the ongoing commitment of the Galleria to maintain a fresh, contemporary and updated look,” according to the statement of justification that accompanied the request.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission has scheduled a Sept. 11 public hearing on the signs. Planning staff is recommending approval, stating in a report that the signs will “provide visibility and identity to the development without creating undo clutter.”
