Florida man charged in wheelchair slaying

MIAMI (AP) — A South Florida man is facing murder and other charges in the fatal shooting of a man in a wheelchair who was begging for change along a busy roadway.

Miami-Dade police say 27-year-old Rodney Louis shot the victim multiple times Tuesday on an Interstate 95 ramp and fled. Officers soon spotted the car, which led them on a high-speed I-95 chase before the vehicle crashed.

The victim was identified as 58-year-old Israel Zerquera of Miami.

Louis was being held Wednesday without bail on charges of first-degree murder, grand theft and fleeing police. A handgun believed used in the shooting found in Louis’ car turned out to be stolen.

No motive was given for the crime. Louis declined to speak with investigators, and no attorney was listed for him.
