DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — An apartment building in Danville damaged by an explosion and fire will be demolished.

City inspections supervisor Charles Fulcher tells The Danville Register & Bee (http://bit.ly/1zDqvdv) that Marshall Construction has applied for a demolition permit.

Fulcher says a crew will have to check the building for asbestos before it can be torn down.

A car ran off the road and hit the building at the Royal Terrace Apartments complex on Aug. 16. The crash severed natural gas lines and the resulting leak filled the building with gas. The gas ignited and exploded, causing a fire.

The car’s driver, 35-year-old James T. Barksdale of Danvile, was charged with driving while intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license.
