WASHINGTON — Car-sharing company car2go has joined the Road to Zero Coalition, a group of private companies, nonprofits, and city, state and federal government agencies dedicated to reducing traffic deaths to zero within 30 years.

The company is offering members a small incentive for taking driver safety courses.

The pilot program starts in D.C. and New York City and will randomly choose 1,000 members to take free online courses provided by the National Safety Council. Those courses normally cost up to $49.95 each.

Car2Go members who take the courses will get rental credits from $5 to $15.

“We are continually enhancing our vehicles with advanced safety features, and we are proud to say that of the 8.75 million trips our North American members took last year, just .01 percent of them involved a road safety incident,” said car2go CEO Paul DeLong.

“Today we take our commitment to road safety a step further with the launch of an innovative new pilot program that provides valuable online road safety courses to our members free of charge, and rewards them for strengthening their road safety knowledge,” he said.

Car2Go says the pilot program will start within the next 30 days. It will evaluate the success of the program, with plans to make it available in additional markets it services in the coming months.
