WASHINGTON — Three people were sent to a hospital and six were displaced Tuesday after a small bus crashed into a group home for senior citizens in Kensington, Maryland.

The crash happened shortly after 4 p.m. on Lawrence Avenue, off Connecticut Avenue. Montgomery County Fire and EMS said that two people on board the minibus and one resident of the house were taken to the hospital. They’re expected to be OK, although Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer said that the resident was standing just inside the wall the bus hit, and was struck.

Six other residents of the house have been displaced by the damage to the home, including to the electric meter, which required that all utilities be shut off. A building inspector has been summoned to the scene.

It’s not known yet why the bus smashed into the building.

Meanwhile, five elementary school students were sent to a hospital as a precaution after a school bus crashed at Aspen Hill Road and Arctic Avenue in Rockville at about 5 p.m.
