Latvala extends lead in Rally of Germany

TRIER, Germany (AP) — Jari-Matti Latvala extended his lead on the second day of the Rally of Germany on Saturday, while Volkswagen teammate Sebastien Ogier crashed heavily and caused a stage to be cancelled.

Ogier, the world champion and series leader who started with a 10-minute penalty after crashing on the opening day Friday, smashed into a roadside barrier on the second stage. The Frenchman and his co-driver Julien Ingrassia were unharmed but were taken to a hospital for precautionary checks. Their Wolkswagen was too badly damaged to restart.

Latvala won five of seven stages to extend his lead to 56.6 seconds over Citroen driver Kris Meeke, who is 4.3 seconds ahead of Thierry Neuville in his Hyundai.

Latvala, winner of three rallies this season, is bidding for his second consecutive victory.
