WASHINGTON — Fire in a Loudoun County, Virginia, townhouse displaced a family of five early Wednesday.

The family who live in the 25000 block of Herring Creek Drive in the South Riding area awoke to the sounds of the smoke alarm just after 2 a.m., according to Laura Rinehart, a spokeswoman for Loudound County Fire and Rescue.

The family managed to get out of the three-story home safely and without injury.

The fire on the deck moved up the back of the home and caused $50,000 in damage.

Fire marshals determined the blaze started on the back deck because of improperly discarded cigarettes or other smoking materials.
