Report: Juvenile detention staffer directed assault on youth

SABILLASVILLE, Md. (AP) — A quarterly report on Maryland Department of Juvenile Services facilities has revealed that a former employee bribed two boys in a state-run youth detention center to attack another boy.

The Frederick News-Post reports a staff member approached two boys in the Sabillasville center in November to beat up a boy who had assaulted him the previous day. He offered to smuggle Chinese food as payment.

The report released by the Juvenile Justice Monitoring Unit, says security cameras recorded the boys assaulting the target in a classroom. The boy received a scrape on his cheek before several staff members, including the instigator, broke up the fight.

One of the assailants approached a supervisory staff member Dec. 2.

Department of Juvenile Services spokeswoman Audra Harrison says the staff member is no longer employed but couldn’t disclose further details.
