WASHINGTON — After a mild winter, at least one local school district is bumping up the last day of school by a full week.

The last day of school for students of Frederick County Public Schools will be June 9, the school system announced Tuesday. Previously the final day of school had been scheduled for June 16, but the school system had only used one of its six “built-in” snow days this year, school spokesman Michael Doerrer told WTOP.

Students will be dismissed two hours early on June 9.

Overall, the mild winter means many school districts are sitting on unused snow days, which has sparked conversations about the school calendar.

But it’s unclear whether that will lead to a shorter school year in all cases. Some schools in the D.C. area designate students’ last day upfront and then add on extra days as necessary to make up for missed classes because of inclement weather.

For example, Montgomery County Public Schools has four snow days built into its school calendar and only used one of them this year. But the final day for students will remain June 16, spokeswoman Felicia Yorro told WTOP in an email.

Elsewhere in the D.C. region, Prince George’s County and Fairfax County Public Schools also used just one snow day this winter.
