WASHINGTON — A toddler drowned in a Loudoun County retention pond Thursday after fierce storms tore through the D.C. region, police said.

At around 4:19 p.m., the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to calls from the 25000 Block Potomac Twain Terrace in the South Riding area for a reported drowning.

According to a news release, the toddler apparently wandered away from his house alone and was later found in a retention pond by family and neighbors who were canvassing the area for him.

Authorities performed CPR before the child was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
