WASHINGTON (AP) — Criminal investigators from the IRS are reviewing records related to an affordable apartment complex in the District of Columbia that’s become a flashpoint in the race for mayor.

A spokesman for the District’s Department of Housing and Community Development says agents from the IRS criminal division seized boxes of management documents from the Park Southern complex on Aug. 12. The agents took records dating back to 2003.

The southeast Washington complex is home to 700 low-income residents. This spring, Mayor Vincent Gray’s administration fired the management team that had been running it, citing missing funds and squalid living conditions.

The displaced managers are political supporters of D.C. Councilmember Muriel Bowser, who defeated Gray in the Democratic mayoral primary. Bowser’s rival, Councilmember David Catania, has criticized her handling of the situation.
