More additives sneak into your foods

WASHINGTON — More and more new food additives are making their way into your meals as the Food and Drug Administration eases its oversight.

The additives, which can be chemical preservatives, flavorings and thickening agents, are popping up in everything from energy drinks to granola bars.

There have been hundreds of cases where the FDA didn’t even know about the new additives, The Washington Post reports.

“We simply do not have the information to vouch for the safety of many of these chemicals,” said Michael Taylor, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for food, tells The Post.

In recent years. the FDA has received complaints about additives that can trigger asthmatic attacks, vomiting, intestinal disorders and other problems.
