WASHINGTON — Arlington County is getting road travelers ready for the warm-weather influx of bicyclists.

The goal of their Safe Bicycling Initiative: To prevent crashes and save lives.

This education and enforcement effort starts Monday and runs through April 4.

During this time, cyclists and motorists will be taught about existing cyclist-specific traffic laws.

Arlington County police say it’s easier to share the roads if motorists, cyclists and pedestrians know the road rules and responsibilities — such as the importance of obeying posted traffic signs or signals and using established hand gestures to communicate intended movements such as turns or lane changes.

Officers will keep a keen eye on how cyclists and motorists interact.

They’ll also enforce laws in an effort to change problematic behaviors so fewer crashes happen.
